Mathew's year in his van

Hey friends, look at this!

Mathew in Canada has resolved to live for a year in his van, mostly parked in an alleyway I think.

Intriguing.  Nice man.

I've added it to the list in the sidebar of  'People who live without money or very simply.'

Here he is in his van:

  1. Wow! Thanks for sharing, Ember. I don't think I could cope with the cold, never mind the tiny space - and I would definitely need to be parked in some greenery! I need earth and trees and wildlife around me...

  2. Yes - me too - my problem would be the alleyway, not the van. I think form some of the photos that it's still driveable though - so depending what the laws are in Canada about overnighting in a vehicle, I guess he could go and stay in the countryside too.
He says in the latest post that he's taken out his bed frame - I'm worried about that because he needs some kind of a frame no matter how low or his mattress will go mouldy - not 'might', 'will'!

By the way I think your washstand, jug and bowl are great - are you pleased with them? x

  3. Thanks for sharing. Have you commented to let him know about the possibilities of a mouldy mattress?!!

    Will be following his journey.

  4. No, I didn't San. I tried to leave a comment on his most recent post where he said about it, but the comment function didn't work.
There's a contact email address, and I sent him a message to wish him well and ask if was OK to have posted his photo on here, but I hadn't read about the mattress then and I didn't like to send another message in case he began to feel stalked! Anyway I sent him a link to here so I just hope he comes across and reads . . .

  5. I always dreamed of doing that. Maybe some day I will, but now I have slightly different dreams. That said, I still think it sounds astonishingly awesome.

  6. Me too, Beth - sometimes I've walked along the street planning and imagining just how I would go about living in a van! x

  7. To live in a van in one place would be a drag. But if I was on the go, from one place to the next, stay a bit pick up a bit of cash to fund my expenses and head of to somewhere, anywhere else and repeat as needed then it would be an adventure.

  8. Fascinating! I took the time to read the entire blog.

Now my back is hurting & I can hardly stand up straight.

  9. Glad you like my washstand, jug and bowl, Ember - I LOVE them! I really enjoy taking my time over my ablutions, in my own bedroom! I'll post the pictures on my blog when I get round to it ;-) x x

  10. Hi Bean - Mathew is a designer, so I think his work travels with him in his computer - I agree with you that travelling would be a crucial aspect of the positives of van living. Plus open spaces create privacy and peace.

Hi Rebecca - yes, it grabs the imagination, doesn't it!

Hi Hawthorne - looking forward to those pics :0) x
