Slip away

So they went off in a boat
to a quiet place
where they could be by themselves

(Mark 6:32)

I'm glad to be reminded of this verse. In these days of cuts and austerity I fear the loss of quiet spaces. Another kind of poverty! It is hard to escape the overhang of traffic noise. The preservation and creation of quiet - a 21st Century vocation.

Yes! In the last couple of years we had concentrated on growing vegetables in our garden, but had begun to feel oppressed by utilitarianism. We planted trees (several fruit trees) and we have loads of herbs, so our garden is still somewhat productive foodwise, but mainly this year we have concentrated on making a peaceful green space for birds, bees and butterflies. It is like a small patch of countryside in the town now, and really feeds our souls.

i love the 'vocation' of preserving and creating quiet spaces. we need them more all the time. my own space here in the american midwest is 'the house of keeping still' (from one of the i ching hexagrams.) blessings on your quiet spaces.
